Tips and tricks for your connected home

Going out? Get an outdoor camera to keep an eye on your home

There’s usually a lot going on at Christmastime, with visits to friends and family and maybe a few parties in between.

It’s already getting busy now, with all the shopping to do in preparation for our festive feasts – not to mention hunting for the perfect Christmas presents! All this means we’ll probably be spending a lot of time out of the house.

Unfortunately, criminals are well aware of this too, which is why we tend to see a rise in burglaries during the festive season. At this time of year, they can also go about their shady business undisturbed under cover of darkness, making off with our prized possessions. This means there’s a higher risk of break-ins, so it’s a good idea to try and make it difficult for intruders to get into our homes in the first place.

Security cameras are here to help

Possibly the easiest way to keep an eye on your home is to get some kind of surveillance camera. This can be connected to your home WiFi network, so you can use an app on your smartphone to see what’s happening at home while you’re out. There are security cameras available for both indoor and outdoor use and they are activated when their built-in motion sensor detects any movement. This will also prompt them to start recording, and you can access the footage via your mobile phone too – useful for providing evidence if anything gets stolen.

The Somfy Outdoor Camera comes in two different colours and can also be linked up to your existing outdoor lighting. The advantage of this is that the lights will come on automatically if any movement is detected, creating the impression that there is someone at home who has seen what’s going on. These outdoor cameras also feature a built-in alarm with a volume of 100 decibels, which – aside from literally raising the alarm and drawing attention – is sure to scare away anyone up to no good!

Great for teaming up with a smart home alarm

Depending on what kind of home you live in, it might also be a good idea to invest in a subscription-free home alarm system to go with your smart outdoor camera. Once you’ve got your own home alarm installed – which can be done in as little as 30 minutes – you can keep an eye on your home security via the free smartphone app.

For extra security, why not connect your outdoor camera to your home alarm? You can easily expand your home alarm system by adding more units and indoor cameras, all of which you can install yourself. There’s no need to get a professional installer or expensive special batteries on top of paying a monthly subscription fee. Somfy’s smart home alarms are subscription-free, so the alarms soon pay for themselves!

It’s never a bad idea to tighten up your home security at Christmastime, and you may sleep more soundly knowing that you have an alarm to keep your home safe for you.
