What is a Smart Smoke Alarm?

A smart smoke alarm goes a step further than a regular smoke alarm. On the face of it, it does basically the same thing: it alerts you when something is on fire in your home.

A smart smoke alarm is one that not only sounds a loud alarm when there’s a fire, it also lets you know something’s wrong by sending an alert to your smartphone.

What are the Advantages of a Smart Smoke Alarm?

A smart smoke alarm helps you make your home even safer than a regular smoke alarm does. The advantages are clearly set out as follows:

You are always alerted immediately when something is wrong.

  • You receive alerts not only when you’re at home and within hearing range of the smoke alarm’s siren, but also when you’re at work, on holiday or eating out. An instant notification is sent to your phone or tablet as soon as your smart smoke alarm is triggered.

Capable of immediately alerting other people.

  • Not only can you receive a push message on your phone, you can also add other people to the system so they are alerted too. For example, you can have instant alerts sent to your neighbours or any family members who live nearby. They can immediately go and assess the situation.

If the alarm sounds, you can use the app to turn it off.

  • You don’t need to climb a ladder to get to your smoke detector in the event of a false alarm: you can immediately turn off the siren with the app.

What do you need to watch out for when Buying a Smart Smoke Detector?

The best choice of smart smoke alarm for you will of course depend on your home and your individual requirements. We have listed a few questions with some explanations to help you choose the smart smoke detector that meets your needs.

1. Do you want your Smart Smoke Detectors to be Linked Together?

The fire service recommends fitting smoke alarms that are connected to each other. If you have linked smoke alarms in your home, they will all go off simultaneously when one of them detects smoke. This means that you are always alerted at the first sign of smoke being produced. This is of particular benefit if you have a large house: even if you are on the third floor you will be alerted immediately if a fire breaks out in the garage. If you live in a small house or flat, linking smoke alarms may be less of a priority.

2. Which Other Devices or Control Systems in your Home do you want to be Connected to your Smart Smoke Alarms?

By linking your smart smoke alarms to your surveillance camera, lighting or your roller shutters, you can programme your home to respond at once if there’s a fire. For example, in the event of fire, you can set your lights to come on and your roller shutters to open. Not only will you be immediately alerted when there’s a fire, your home will instantly be ready for you to get out quickly and safely. You can also set your surveillance camera to respond to your smoke detector so you can instantly view live images on your smartphone when your smoke alarm goes off.

3. Do your Smart Smoke Alarms have to work Independently?

Some smart smoke alarms are controlled by a base station, others work independently. Do you already have a base station capable of controlling your smart smoke alarms, for example a Somfy TaHoma®? Or would you prefer separate smoke alarms that are not connected to a base station, but that can be linked to each other?

4. WiFi Smoke Alarms

A WiFi smoke alarm is always connected to your smartphone. A smart smoke alarm is also connected over your WiFi to other smart home devices, e.g. your security camera. For example, a Somfy security camera with a built-in alarm operates in conjunction with a smoke alarm over your WiFi, so if the WiFi smoke alarm goes off, the alarm on your security camera will also sound.

If your WiFi smoke alarm is connected to the TaHoma® hub, you can configure other connected devices so they too respond to your smoke alarms. For example, with If This, Then That (IFTT) you can compose a scenario such as: if my smoke alarm goes off, I want an app to be sent to me and my neighbours, I want the lights in the hall and in the bedrooms to be turned on, and I want the electrically operated curtains to open.

Consequently, your house will respond immediately when something goes wrong, saving you valuable moments.

How & Where to Fit Smoke Alarms?

The best place for a smoke alarm: you might think it’s where your smoke alarm would quickly detect a fire, i.e. in the kitchen or the bathroom. You’d be wrong though: you don’t want to fit a smoke alarm in rooms where smoke or steam are produced regularly, as this will result in lots of false alarms. This also applies to the garage: your car’s exhaust fumes can also set off your smoke alarm.

If you are in any doubt about where to place your smoke alarm(s), here are a few tips to help you choose the best spot(s):

  • In all cases, you should fit your smoke alarm to the ceiling because heat and smoke rise.
  • Do not install a smoke alarm near ventilation grilles, fans or heaters, as the air circulation may prevent smoke particles from reaching the sensor.
  • For the same reason do not select a location close to a window.
  • As a rule of thumb, always fit smoke alarms more than 20 cm away from an obstruction (e.g. a wall or light fitting) and more than 60 cm from the corner of the room.
