The demand for Smart Homes

There are an estimated 54 million smart homes across Europe and that figure is expected to surpass 110 million by 2025.

But why is there such demand for smart homes and connected living?

Well, more recently, the global pandemic has changed how we use our homes. For many, it’s become a multi-functional space where we work, exercise and relax.
Today’s buyers and tenants are also far more aware of the need to reduce their overall energy consumption. There is a greater understanding of the role technology can play in this and developers are now striving to create spaces that offer comfort, efficiency and security as well as addressing long-term sustainability. With such an increase in demand, experts believe global investment in green buildings could reach $24.7 trillion dollars by 2030.
With Somfy, your residential development can be a smart, reactive hub, far exceeding the expectations of buyers today and in the future.

What are the benefits of adding smart home solutions to your residential building?

Climate experts estimate that over the past 100 years the average temperature in Europe has risen by one degree; leading to an increase in the frequency of heatwaves across the continent. If the rise in temperature continues to surpass two degrees, then we’re at risk of the most dangerous consequences of climate change. To help combat this issue the European Commission has set-up several initiatives; including encouraging the adoption of new technologies such as solar shading or smart blinds to automate the control of light into buildings, contributing to the reduction of overheating, and in winter harnessing the warmth of the sun.

Homes and buildings that reach extreme temperatures can not only be extremely uncomfortable to live in but can, in the worst-case cause severe health issues for their occupants, particularly the vulnerable or elderly. The World Health Organisation has predicted that 15% of the 250,000 annual additional deaths due to climate change in the 2030s and 2040s will be due to heat-related stress among those over the age of 75.
Solutions, such as smart awnings or smart blinds can help to control building temperatures, thereby helping to combat overheating and increase comfort all year round.

Using home automation to harness natural light can lead to long-term health benefits as well as cutting energy consumption and lowering carbon emissions.

Climate change is a global issue. Governments across Europe are introducing new regulations to meet the EU Commission’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050.
There is now a real focus on creating sustainable ways of doing things, including the design and construction of buildings.
Why buildings? Well, in most EU countries, it’s suggested that only 10% of buildings can report good energy performance, mainly due to poor construction and insulation.
It’s for these reasons that experts believe construction, homes and buildings are responsible for 39% of global carbon emissions. So, we have a duty to take positive action to save energy and become more efficient.
This includes legislation that has been put in place to ban gas heating from residential homes in parts of Europe from 2025, in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. Developers are also being encouraged to harness the power of daylight, which research shows can reduce our reliance on artificial light by as much as 20%.
By combining the power of natural light with smart solutions designers can create far more efficient ‘green’ buildings that could potentially contribute to a 50% reduction in overall energy usage as well as decreasing carbon emissions by up to 30%.

When we think about home security we often think about crimes affecting the property. And for good reason. Burglaries are one of the most prevalent crimes in Northern Europe; In 2019 there were over 1.5 million break-ins recorded by police across the EU.
However, security is far more than just protecting your home. It encompasses everything from ensuring family members is safe and secure to alerting homeowners to damage to their house.
Smart home solutions and a connected house provide homeowners with peace of mind and complete control of their property, whether they are home or away. They enable the protection of loved ones from a smartphone, offering reassurance at the touch of a button. Reassurance in knowing that children are safely back from school while you’re at the office, or that elderly relatives are comfortable when you’re working in another room.
Smart home solutions such as internal and external cameras can work in conjunction with automated shutters and smart blinds to enhance home security and deliver complete peace of mind when it comes to all aspects of home security.
