Cleaning (Electric) Roller Shutters in 7 Steps: Here's How

Want to make your roller shutters shine like new again? Feeling unsure where to start? No worries! In this blog, you'll discover how to clean your (electric) roller shutters, all in 7 simple steps.

Whether it's moss, dust, or dark spots, over time your roller shutters may need a good scrub. Not only does this make them look radiant again, but it also extends their lifespan by preventing dirt and mold from settling into the shutter mechanism.

So, you're ready to roll up your sleeves and grab your cleaning supplies! But where do you begin, and how do you ensure you don't accidentally damage your shutters while cleaning? The step-by-step plan below will guide you through!

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
A good start is half the battle. Ensure you're well-prepared by having all your materials within reach. Here's what you'll need:

  • A soft cloth, a sponge, and/or a clean toothbrush
  • A mild cleaning agent, such as green soap, vinegar, or HG roller shutter cleaner
  • A vacuum cleaner with a nozzle
  • A ladder to reach all areas effectively

Step 2: Remove Coarse Dirt with a Vacuum Cleaner
Before diving into your cleaning solution, use a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle to tackle the coarse dirt. Place the nozzle gently on the roller shutter, both on the outside and inside if possible, to remove dirt, even from hard-to-reach places.

Step 3: Lower the Shutter and Disconnect the Power
Lower the shutter and stop it just before the bottom bar reaches its lowest point. Leave the air slots between the slats slightly open to facilitate cleaning. Now, temporarily turn off the power or unplug your roller shutter. Also, cover nearby electrical components, perhaps with a plastic bag or masking tape, to prevent accidental exposure to moisture and damage.

Step 4: Create a Soapy Solution with a Mild Cleaner
The last step in the 'preparation' category is creating a soapy solution. Use lukewarm water and a mild cleaning agent. Avoid aggressive cleaners like abrasives, chlorine, and anti-limescale, as they may harm the paint on your slats and leave unsightly stains. Specialized cleaning agents for shutters are available at reputable retailers.

Step 5: Wipe the Slats on the Outside with a Soft Cloth or Sponge
All set with your preparations? Now it's time to actually clean your roller shutters and make them sparkle again.

Take a soft cloth or sponge, lightly dampened with the soapy solution, and gently wipe the slats on the outside of your shutter. Apply minimal pressure and, importantly, work from top to bottom to avoid dirty water droplets falling onto the slats you've just cleaned!

Step 6: Clean the Slats on the Inside
Is the outside of your roller shutter clean? The next step is to address the inside. If you have easy access (such as through an open window), you can leave the shutter hanging. However, if that's not possible, you might need to (have it) disassemble the shutter.

Regardless, roll the shutter all the way up and unscrew the cover of the shutter box. Clean the inside of the cover carefully, perhaps using a toothbrush and the soapy solution. Then, gradually lower the slats while cleaning them with the soapy solution and a dry cloth or sponge.

Step 7: Let Your Roller Shutter Dry and Restore the Power
Done with cleaning the inside of your roller shutter? Let everything dry thoroughly before rolling up the slats and screwing the cover back on. After this, restore the power/plug it back in, and you're done! Your electric roller shutter is now completely clean.

To further extend the lifespan of your roller shutter
To give your roller shutter an extra boost in longevity, it's advisable to care for it once a year using special maintenance products. This involves:

  • Waxing your roller shutter with a wax product to make it dirt-repellent.
  • Applying dry lubricant to the rubber components. This displaces moisture and removes deposits.

Automate Your Roller Shutter's Response to Weather Changes
Did you know you can automate your electric roller shutter to respond to weather changes? With a brightness sensor, it can go up or down depending on detected light levels. Similarly, a temperature sensor enables automatic adjustments based on changes in outdoor temperature. Handy! This way, you'll always enjoy a pleasant indoor climate without having to worry about it.
