Somfy motors

Discover the differences

Just a nice comparison: when you buy a car, for example, you mainly look at the offering as a whole. The comfort, brand, application, price and perhaps design are important conditions. Some choose the top model, others the basic version.

In most cases, we don't really think about the type of engine under the hood, do we?  We usually allow the car salesman to recommend us the right type of engine, size, power, speed and at what (additional) price. He is the specialist who helps you with your final choice. In a sense you can also compare this to the use of a motor in your electric blinds, shutters or garage door. The dealer's advice is indispensable and decisive.

What you should know about motorisation

Somfy is the worldwide specialist and market leader in the field of motorization solutions for all types of indoor and outdoor sun protection, garage doors and fencing. Many Somfy motors all look the same from the outside. Often an elongated tube with a motor head and supply wire at the end. The size and cross-section may differ depending on the application. In practice, you do not see the motor as it is integrated, almost invisibly during the assembly of your awning or roller shutter.

But just like with a car, you don't necessarily want to know what the engine looks like, it is mainly about the performance such as the required engine power, comfort, speed and range. Budget and other wishes also play a role in your final choice. This also applies when using a Somfy motor in, for example, your patio awning or shutters.

Type of motorisations

Main principles

Somfy motors have various smart functions that will increase your comfort. The choice of a particular type of motor is highly dependent on a number of important factors. In general, these are:

  • What type of awning or roller shutter is involved;
  • The weight (Kg) and the size (m2), due to the required motor pulling force;
  • Your desired control, hand transmitter and / or smartphone or fixed switch;
  • Budget, we offer both top of the range and entry-level models at Somfy;
  • The motor running speed, measured in the number of revolutions per minute;
  • Technology: the specific differences between io-homecontrol®, RTS or wired solutions.

About technology

What you should know about radio or wired technology

RTS or Wired technology

Somfy radio technology (RTS) has been used worldwide for many years in applications such as indoor and outdoor awnings. RTS is a 'closed' Somfy system with a wide range of easily connectable products. RTS has proven itself as an extremely reliable technology with many millions of applications and just as many satisfied users.

RTS motor types:

  • Outdoor patio awnings: Sunea RTS, Altus RTS, Orea RTS
  • Roller shutters: Oximo RTS, Altus RTS
  • Garage doors: Dexxo Pro RTS, Dexxo Compact RTS
  • Interior blinds: Sonesse RTS, Roll Up RTS, Tilt & Lift RTS, Tilt Only RTS, Altus RTS
  • Curtain tracks: Glydea RTS, Irismo RTS, Movelite RTS

In addition, we also supply our wired motor types (WT), often applied when a consumer prefers full wiring with a fixed switch to the application. Again, the proven reliability applies, but at the same time it has its limitations when it comes to optional extensions.

WT motor types:

  • Outdoor patio awnings: Orea WT, Altus WT, LT, SLT, LS 40 and Solus PA.
  • Roller shutters: Oximo WT, ilmo WT, Altus WT, LT, LS 40 and Solus PA
  • Garage doors: RDO 50 CSI
  • Interior blinds: Sonesse WT, LV 25, LW 25
  • Curtain tracks: Glydea 60E DCT

Looking to the future, Somfy will further phase out its RTS and WT products and replace with io-homecontrol®.

Somfy motors - Lifespan and warranty

In general, a Somfy motor will last a very long time with normal use. The lifespan of a Somfy motor is closely related to correct application, installation and use. An example: if a motor that is too heavy or too light was used for your application, this will affect the expected service life. Somfy gives you a 5 year warranty on all tubular motors (from production date).
