Electric Exterior Screens and Shutters

When you are looking around before buying powered screens or rollers hutters, you will find a wide selection of types, makes, colours, qualities and options. Your local dealer will be happy to explain all the options.

The dealer will also show you the different Somfy controls, accessories and types of motors available to help you make the right choice of motor for your powered screens and shutters.

On this page we have set out the different ways in which Somfy makes blinds easy and convenient. We hope this will help make your choice easier.

Types of exterior window blinds and shutters

Roller Shutters

Roller shutters are becoming increasingly popular in our part of the world as they increase your sense of security, and their excellent insulating properties mean they make outstanding blinds. The casing is made of metal or plastic and the slats move along a channel. The ventilation position leaves small gaps between the slats.

Vertical Screens

Elegant, modern design. The screen fabric runs up and down two channels, allowing different degrees of light transmission and physical qualities. A zip screen keeps the screen fabric evenly tensioned so it is much less susceptible to damage by high winds than cheaper systems. It’s the ideal solution, especially for upper-floor flats.

Exterior Venetian blinds

Exterior Venetian blinds are closely related to roller shutters but with wide tilting aluminium slats. The slats can be adjusted so you can allow the perfect amount of sunlight into your home. In our part of the world, this type of blind is more frequently fitted to commercial buildings than to homes.

Drop-arm window awning

The traditional drop-arm window awning comes with or without a cassette. A drop-arm awning has two arms that pivot up and down, and the weight of the leading bar pulls the fabric tight. You mainly see them on the windows of bedrooms or kitchens.

How would you like to operate your blinds?

First you opened and closed your blinds by pulling a cord or rotating a crank. Then, along came the wall-mounted switch, which was soon followed by the hand-held remote control.  We have now reached the time when we can use our smartphones to control more and more of our domestic devices, and our blinds and roller shutters are no exception. The great thing is that both your smartphone and the Somfy remote control can control the motors that operate your blinds or roller shutters. If you don’t happen to have the remote control to hand, then you can use your smartphone and vice versa. No problem. How easy and convenient is that?

Expandable with climate sensors

As you can see from the above, the controls for the motor that operates your Somfy screens or blinds can be adapted to match your lifestyle. A tubular motor from Somfy is extremely versatile: whether you want to control your screen motor with a traditional wall-mounted switch or with your smartphone, Somfy has the solution.

If you want your sun blinds to respond automatically to the weather, that’s no problem either. With a Somfy sun sensor, temperature sensor or a wind sensor, your awning motor or screen motor will respond to changes in the weather. The feedback feature keeps you informed of the current status.

Has the sun come out? Your screens close automatically, even when you’re away. Is a strong wind getting up? The wind sensor sends a signal to the Somfy patio awning motor telling it to retract. You no longer have to think about your blinds!

If you are looking to buy a Somfy motor for an awning or other types of screens or blinds, then consult an expert first, so you know which motor is most suitable for your needs. Your advisor will help you choose from different types of motors, for example:

  • Somfy Sunea io motor
  • Somfy Maestria+ 50 io motor
  • Somfy Orea RTS motor
  • Somfy Altus RTS motor
  • Somfy LT motor (LT50, LT60)

There are several other types available, with fewer features or connectivity options.
There are many factors that will affect your choice of motor. If the motor is too powerful or underpowered, it could result in damage to the screen of your awning or to the motor itself. Factors that affect your choice of Somfy motor are:

  • the type of blind that you wish to motorize;
  • the weight and dimensions (in m2) of your blinds;
  • the type of control you would like;
  • the speed at which you want to be able to open and close your blinds;
  • RTS or io-homecontrol technology;
  • any other options you would like to have.

Ask your Somfy dealer about which type of tubular blinds motor best suits your window furnishings and requirements.
