What's new in the UK?

Here at Somfy, our UK Projects team is responsible for helping building designers and owners manage daylight effectively in their buildings, leading to improved well-being and productivity for the people that use them.

Working on all sizes of projects in several sectors, such as education, retail and office, their focus is on how dynamic solar shading control solutions can actively contribute to buildings delivering a much better experience for their occupants, when it comes to well-being, comfort and productivity. The team actively works with building owners, developers and designers to promote early engagement on shading to ensure the right solution is specified early in the design process, to ensure the best possible contribution to energy efficiency and sustainability.

Here the team provides collective insights into their current projects and the latest sector trends.

How has working changed over the last year at Somfy?

Flexibility has been the key over the past year.  We have had to be innovative in the way we work, adapting to the regular changes in government guidelines. Meeting customers face-to-face was not always an option. We had to be clear and keep the communication open with our customers; ensuring that they received regular updates on their projects. From an operational perspective we have been fortunate to continue working onsite. Health and Safety, as always, remains at the forefront of all our projects, we have put many processes in place to ensure the safe working of all.

What types of projects are you currently working on?

We are working on a real mix of projects currently – which is brilliant.   They range from major projects in the city of London to smaller sized projects across the UK, varying across a number of sectors, from commercial offices to education buildings.

Tell us about the moment you’re most proud of as a team?

Being part of the development for the tallest building in London’s financial district would be right up there.  It was a huge effort from all the team and one which we should all be very proud of. We have a few exciting projects lined up across a range of sectors;  financial, pharmaceuticals, education and government to name a few!

Where should we be looking to right now? What’s next for smart technology?

We’ve seen increase in demand for touchless technology following the onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Technology is always advancing so there is always something new in the marketplace, luckily we have a great team of product developers who are always on the look out for the next big trend!  There is still a big focus on sustainability and creating buildings which provide occupant well-being and energy efficiencies.

So, what’s next for the team?

We’re delighted that we have just launched our new RIBA accredited CPD programme in the UK ‘Managing Daylight – Using automated solar shading to improve building efficiency, wellbeing and productivity’

We’re really looking forward to being able to deliver this to architecture practices in the UK, both online or face-to-face and getting involved in some discussions with their teams around how solar shading can be utilized to achieve client goals.
