Biomedicum picks up Building of the Year Award

Great news for Biomedicum in Stockholm, which has been announced as the winner of Årets Bygge 2019, Building of the year award!

“For this large, high specification building, our animeo KNX solution intelligently controls the solar shading to ensure optimum lighting management, glare protection, and enables better visual and thermal comfort for the occupants to perform their vital work. Shadows on the façade at different times of the day and year are taken into account to be able to maximize the use of natural light. This solution also removes the need for sun sensors on the façade.

We’re delighted to have been involved in this important building and it is great to see it receive this award.”

Fredrik Backman, Business Development Manager for Somfy Projects

Biomedicum, built by Akademiska Hus for Karolinska Institutet in Solna, is one of Europe's largest research labs with space to accommodate up to 1,600 researchers and other staff.

Extending over eleven floors, the building is equipped with cutting edge technology to enable world-leading experimental research. Promoting interaction, collaboration and the exchange of experience, ideas and techniques across borders, at Biomedicum, several scientific disciplines are collected under one roof for the first time.

For Biomedicum, we provided an animeo KNX solution with a Shadow Management function. Fredrik Backman, Business Development Manager for Somfy Projects explains why this solution was chosen.

These awards recognise examples of high performing construction projects in quality, collaboration, budget and form during the year.

The jury’s comments on why Biomedicum won this award were:

"The winner of the Building of the Year 2019 has succeeded in a complicated and comprehensive project. The project group has had high ambitions in terms of development of collaboration, working climate and safety thinking - and succeeded. The project has also completed before the deadline and at greatly reduced costs compared to budget. "

Hayar Gohary, project director at Akademiska Hus, commented “We are incredibly proud that Biomedicum has been named Building of the Year. The goal has been to create a unique gathering point for cross-border research and collaboration. This is an acknowledgment that we have succeeded in our work process and through good cooperation with all parties involved generated the best balance between economy, time and quality.”
